Today is Tesla’s AI Day, the sequel to the 2019 Corporate Autonomy Day event. The event, which will be held at Tesla’s headquarters in Palo Alto, CA, will be broadcast live to the general public from 5pm PT/8:00pm EST. Events may not actually start until closer to 5:30 PM Pacific Time.
No details on what will be announced, but by invitation, Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s keynote, Tesla engineers’ hardware and software demo, Model S Plaid test drive, and more.” Musk also tweeted that the event’s “only goals” said that it will bring experts in robotics and artificial intelligence to work at Tesla.
Tesla typically holds about two public events a year. This year, there was a Tesla Model S Plaid launch event in June and it is now AI Day. Over the past few years, Tesla has held events to highlight specific technologies that the company deems important to its future development, rather than to unveil new products. Last year, Tesla hosted its first Battery Day event where they discussed plans to lower the cost of developing batteries with a goal of producing $25,000 electric vehicles.
AI Day is expected to pick up a theme first introduced during Autonomy Day, which includes manufacturing Tesla’s own silicon computer chip to enhance autonomous driving advanced driver assistance features.
This AI Day comes at an awkward time for the company. Earlier this week, the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it was investigating Tesla’s autopilot in nearly a dozen cases in which Tesla’s cars collided with emergency vehicles. Two Democrats also asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Tesla’s marketing practices for potentially misleading information.
