Apple’s digital assistant Siri handles the device’s audio natively in iOS 15, so you can use it without an internet connection. Apple says upgrades will make Siri faster
Processing audio on your device makes Siri more private. This follows the well-established preference of companies implementing machine learning capabilities on their devices instead of sending data to the cloud for processing.
“This addresses one of the biggest privacy concerns of voice assistants, unwanted audio recordings,” Apple said in a press statement.
Obviously, certain Siri functions cannot be performed without an internet connection, such as: web search. But you can use Apple’s digital assistant for simple navigation tasks like controlling music, opening apps, setting timers, and more. Making these features accessible offline is also a big move for accessibility.
However, this feature is only available on iPhones and iPads with the A12 Bionic chip or later. That means iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max and iPhone SE (2nd Generation) iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max; iPad Mini (5th generation); iPad Air (3rd and 4th generation) and iPad (8th generation). And no Apple Watch availability.
