Apple will discontinue its original full-size HomePod and will now focus its speaker efforts on the HomePod mini, the company said. TechCrunch On Friday evening.
Here’s what Apple said in a statement: TechCrunch:
The HomePod mini has been popular since its debut last fall and offers customers amazing sound, intelligent assistants, and smart home controls all for $99. We are focusing our efforts on the HomePod mini. The original HomePod will be discontinued and will continue to be available through the Apple Online Store, Apple Retail Store, and Apple Authorized Reseller while stock runs out. Apple provides HomePod customers with software updates and service and support through Apple Care.
The space gray model of the full-sized HomePod has already sold out at Apple’s online store.
The full-size HomePod had great sound quality, but was criticized for its high price of $349 at the time of launch. Apple eventually dropped the price to $299 in April 2019 and released a $99 HomePod mini last year.
The movement is not surprising at all. HomePod’s sales are known to be low, and in our review, we felt that the HomePod mini sounds good for its size.
